June 17th is World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, a United Nations initiative to remind us of the importance of protecting our soils and managing water responsibly.
At Les Seviques, this day is very close to our hearts. Our farm practices regenerative agriculture, a model that allows us to conserve the land, retain water, and produce sustainably. That's why we want to use this day to raise awareness about the problem... and also about the solutions.
Why should we act against desertification?
According to the UN, 40% of the Earth's land surface is degraded. This environmental problem has extremely serious impacts:
-
Less food production → Which puts food security at risk.
-
Economic impact → Agricultural areas lose profitability and employment.
-
Ecological crisis → Decreased biodiversity and increased emissions.
-
Forced migrations → Millions of people lose their fertile lands.
What are we doing in Les Seviques to combat the drought?
At our farm in Torre de l'Espanyol, we apply regenerative management techniques that protect the soil, conserve water, and regenerate the ecosystem. These are some of the most notable:
Regenerative agriculture
-
We don't till the land: we prevent erosion and maintain the soil structure.
-
We use plant cover crops that protect and give life to the soil.
-
We practice crop rotation and association to maintain fertility.
-
We add natural compost and work with sheep and chickens to close the cycle.
Efficient water management
-
We collect rainwater for irrigation.
-
We use drip irrigation systems, which are more efficient and responsible.
-
We adapt each crop to its actual water needs, without wasting water.
Reforestation and biodiversity
-
We plant trees and native vegetation.
-
We create habitats for beneficial fauna.
-
We promote a living and balanced agricultural ecosystem.
Education and awareness
We spread knowledge about rural sustainability, soil regeneration, and how we can combat drought through our habits and decisions.
The time to act is now.
World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is more than a date: it is a call to collective action.
At Les Seviques, we work with our hearts set on the land. But real change happens when many people join in. That's why we encourage you to:
-
Choose responsible products
-
Support sustainable projects
